03/09/2010 - New Job!
It's been a while since my last post and a lot has been going on... Firstly, I finally have a new job role :-) I'm moving into tech-sales so that im more client-facing, while still keeping hands-on where needed. It should be a good change for me and will help improve my all-round skills. I've also been doing a lot of work around virtualization and power-saving on Linux. I've been making good headway and i've put a page in the Projects section relating to my findings and how you can help save power on your systems...
Other than that, its just been a manic two months in trying to get everything handed over to my replacement so that everything continues to run smoothly. I'm slowing going through my Todo list and trying to get things done, but it's slow going. I still have lots to do both inside and outside of work :S
Finally, I'm nearly ready to release a new version of the Kernel Builder as I have fixed a few bugs with it and made a number of improvements. There is better logging support and better performance on multi-core machines by default :-) As soon as I have tested this one I will get it uploaded.
25/06/2010 - A week in the USA!
A few weeks have passed since my last blog entry, and a lot has been happening! I'm currently about to fly back from the USA after spending a week on a project where im the VMware Expert :-) It's actually been good to advise people on the best strategy and implementation of large systems, and overall they should see a lot of benefit from the recomendations.
It's also only 4 days until my holiday, so i'm looking forward to getting nicely sunburnt abroad! Given its been around 7 years since my last holiday, I plan to make the most of this one!
Project wise its all being going pretty slowly. I've made a few changes here and there, but nothing that major atm. It's all on hold until I come back from holiday and can get back into full swing! I'm hoping to start looking at the rootfs builder again and see if I can make it as generic and as useful as the kernel builder. I've also been contemplating buying a BeagleBoard at some point, but im still undecided.
On a down note, Google Power is giving me some cause for concern, as I can no longer push my readings to them (as I have aparantly exceeded my quota). What worries me is how after instructing it to delete all of my data permanantly (and it confirming it was gone), it still says my quota is exceeded. Something tells me my data might not actually be gone. When I get a chance I will re-investigate, but it can wait for a week or two.
Until next time ;)
18/05/2010 - Delays, and yet more delays
A much earlier than expected blog post this time, notably down to product delays and my annoyance with certain companies atm. As many people will have no doubt guessed, im still waiting for my JooJoo to even be shipped :@ This is made more frustrating by the fact the company who produce them don't email you to notify them that they are delayed! The 2nd 'it will be shipped by this date' has now passed, and im left wondering once again where my device is...
I have also been relatively annoyed by Spotify as of late and their inability to work with the open-source community. After numerous emails to them there is still no sign of an official API that works on ARM devices, and understandably they still take their stance to the reverse-engineered libraries. I can see why they can't endorse it, but for the sake of a recompile (providing their code is actually well written), I find it frustrating that they don't do it. I was looking forward to using Spotify/Qtify/any other version on my N900, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Safe to say I've now cancelled my subscription with them, and will look at moving to We7 as an alternative, as they also provide a cheaper package for those who don't need mobile access.
On a good note at least, I've posted my kernel build scripts onto the site. I wrote this a while back for an embedded device of mine, but have since upgraded it and given it some nice features such as profiles, so that I can build kernels for multiple devices (and different architectures) with ease. It works really well here, though im sure there are still a few problems. I will be keeping it updated as I add new devices to the collection :-)
Hopefully my next posting should be a bit chirpier, and given its only 6 weeks to my holiday, I will definately be happier around that time :-)
Never stand still...
Added a new project page on Linux power saving and a new blog entry :-)
Added a new version of the MTS conversion script (which fixes audio problems)
Updated the JooJoo project page and added a new blog entry :-)
